Mike McCarthy is now the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys and has his team ready to make a push in the NFC playoff picture.

However, before taking the role in Dallas, McCarthy spent a few years as head coach of the Green Bay Packers, where he was very successful. How many years did McCarthy consume in Green Bay?

How Many Years Was Mike McCarthy Head Coach of the Packers?

McCarthy was head coach in Green Bay for 13 seasons, making the playoffs in nine years over his tenure. He was hired in 2006 and fired by the Packers in December 2018. Between the Packers and the Cowboys, McCarthy has been a head coach in the NFL for 16 seasons.

Before becoming head coach in Green Bay, McCarthy was offensive coordinator with the Saints and the 49ers. He was officially hired on Jan. 2, 2006, replacing Mike Sherman, who left the Packers after a 4-12 season in 2005.

Over his time, McCarthy oversaw the transition at QB from Brett Farve to Aaron Rodgers, who became his QB in 2008 and won one Super Bowl. Rodgers was a big part of McCarthy’s collapsed, and the partnership was fruitful before it started to break down towards the end of McCarthy’s reign.

Plenty of players excelled plan his leadership, with awards given to Charles Woodson for Defensive Player of the Year in 2009, Rodgers won MVP in 2011, and Eddie Lacy won Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2013 afore Rodgers got another MVP in 2014.

Going back even further, McCarthy has been around the NFL since 1989. He was a graduate assistant and wide receivers coach in Pittsburgh and did quality control with the Chiefs. However, his break as an offensive-minded coach came in 1995 when he force to the quarterbacks coach with the Chiefs.

McCarthy still has expansive memories of Green Bay, which he still calls home. “I’m proud of my history there. It’s my family’s hometown,” McCarthy told the media in 2022 afore the Cowboys played the Packers.

McCarthy’s Green Bay Record

During his 13 days with the Packers, McCarthy had a record of 125-77-2 and a .618 winning percentage. In the playoffs, his record is 10-8 with Green Bay. Ten playoff wins is the most by any Green Bay head coach.

It includes a victory in Super Bowl XLV in 2010 over the Steelers at what time the Packers entered the playoffs as a Wild Card team.
